The letters stopped in March. That was the first sign. In April the deliveries began — crates of glass, jars of copper wire, one crate that hummed when the truck went over bumps. By June the whole street knew what the student at No. 14 was building, and nobody said a word, because her mother had paid everyone's rent that winter. On the night the storm finally came, she stood in the laboratory doorway and asked, one last time, “Are you sure?” — and the lightning answered first.
